There has been little or no movement between the current opposition and a newer party to join ahead of national elections, two party officials said Monday.

The Sam Rainsy Party—the only opposition party with seats in parliament—has so far been unable to woo the Human Rights Party into joining a coalition, Kem Sokha, head of the HRP said Monday.

Kem Sokha spoke live from VOA's studio in Washington on "Hello VOA," along with new party lieutenant, Keo Remy, during a trip to the US to drum up support for his party ahead of national elections in July next year.

It is unclear whether the Human Rights Party will pose a political threat to the Sam Rainsy Party, but Kem Sokha said he had not decided to join a union of democrats.

Both Kem Sokha and Keo Remy said they were confident the Human Rights Party would be able to sway voters to create a forceful opposition against the Cambodian People's Party.

The party platform would be trust and transparency, they said.
