The Supreme Council of Magistracy is scheduled to make a July 15 decision on a case alleging corruption and extortion by court prosecutor Kong Seth, officials said Wednesday.

Kong Seth has been suspended from his duties at Kampong Speu provincial court, pending the decision of legal or ethical wrongdoing by the Disciplinary Council, court and Ministry of Justice officials said.

Kong Seth has denied the allegations, and his wife, Lim Nei, told VOA Khmer recently she would seek the intervention of Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Officials say the prime minister has already approved the investigation.

The government has said it is committed to judicial reform, a major concern of international donors, who provide millions of dollars in aid to the country each year.

Legal experts say such reform has lacked transparency and accountability, claiming that many judges and prosecutors, for example, are beyond retirement age and continue to work, despite a growing number of young legal professionals.
