세계적인 제약회사인 글락소스미스클라인, 약칭 GSK사는 유럽 보건 당국으로부터 인체 조류독감 백신의 판매 승인을 받았다고 밝혔습니다. 이번 조치로 세계 각국은 인체 조류독감의 대유행에  대비해 백신을 확보할 수 있는 길이 열리게 됐습니다.

유럽 제약 기구의 이번 결정으로 글락소 사는 유럽연합의 27개 회원국들에서 조류독감 백신 ‘프리팬드릭스’를 판매할 수 있게 됐습니다. 글락소 사는 이미 스위스와 미국으로부터 주문을 받았다고 밝혔습니다.

프리팬드릭스는 인체에 치명적인 H5N1 조류독감 바이러스에 대해 면역반응을 유발하는 것으로 알려졌습니다.

Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline announced today (Monday) it has received permission from European medical regulators to market a human bird flu vaccine. This move will enable countries to stockpile the vaccine in preparation for a pandemic.

The ruling from the European Medicines Agency allows Glaxo to sell Prepandrix in all 27 European Union member states. Prepandrix targets the virulent H5N1 strain of the virus that can be fatal to humans.

Glaxo says it already has orders from Switzerland and the United States.

Experts believe the H5N1 strain has killed at least 241 people worldwide since 2003.
