대만 검찰이 부패와 돈세탁 혐의로 리덩후이 전 총통을 조사하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

검찰 대변인은 26일 리 전 총통에 대해 부패 혐의의 기소 여부를 검토 중이라고 말했습니다. 이 대변인에 따르면 이미 본인도 부패 혐의로 기소된 천수이볜 전 총통이 리 전 총통 관련 정보를 제공했습니다.

천수이벤 전 총통은 이달 초 기자회견을 갖고, 리덩후이전 총통 역시 재임 기간 동안 최소한 3천만 달러를 해외로 빼돌렸다고 주장했었습니다.

리 전 총통은 그 혐의를 부인하고 있습니다.

천수이벤 전 총통은 부패 혐의로 이 달 초 기소됐습니다.

Taiwanese prosecutors say they are opening an investigation into former president Lee Teng-hui, who has been accused of corruption and money laundering.

A spokesman at the prosecutor's office in Taipei confirmed today (Friday) that the office will look into the corruption charges. The spokesman said Mr. Lee's successor, Chen Shui-bian, had provided information for the investigation.

Mr. Chen has made public charges against Mr. Lee in the past. Earlier this month he told reporters that Mr. Lee transferred at least 30-million dollars into overseas accounts during his tenure as president.

Mr. Lee has denied those accusations.

Mr. Chen was indicted on corruption charges himself earlier this month.
