Yushchenko Names New Head of State Security Service

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has named Oleksandr Turchinov as head of the country's security service, while warning the agency to stay out of politics.

Mr. Yushchenko stressed the importance of honesty in the security service, which had been accused of a role in the poisoning of the new president during last year's election campaign.

The Ukrainian leader Tuesday also appointed Petro Poroshenko as secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.

Mr. Yushchenko fell seriously ill and his face became disfigured last year due to what doctors said was dioxin poisoning.

He went on to win the presidency in December in a court-ordered revote that replaced fraudulent November balloting.
