Taiwan Announces Diplomatic Relations With Vanuatu

Taiwan says it has established diplomatic relations with the South Pacific island-nation of Vanuatu.

The move raises to 27 the number of countries that have relations with Taiwan. Many of them are poor countries in Africa and Latin America.

China considers Taiwan a renegade province, and opposes moves by the island to raise its international profile.

Tensions over the issue have escalated since Chen Shui-bian became Taiwan's president.
