Europeans, Iranians Hold Third Round of Nuclear Talks

Diplomats from France, Germany and Britain are holding a new round of nuclear talks Friday in Paris with Iranian officials.

The Europeans hope to persuade Iran to stop enriching uranium, which can be used in both nuclear fuel and nuclear weapons. As incentive, they have offered to resume a trade agreement that would give Iran access to sought after European markets.

But Iran has remained firm, saying enrichment activities are allowed within its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Diplomats on both sides expect the negotiations to be difficult, but hope a compromise can be reached before the International Atomic Energy Agency takes up the issue on November 25.

If no deal is struck before then, the Europeans are expected to support the U.S. demand that Iran be referred before the U.N. Security Council, which could impose economic sanctions on Tehran.
