Swimming Champ Phelps Charged with Drunk Driving

Six-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps of the United States has been charged with drunken driving.

In a statement Monday, state police said Phelps was arrested Thursday after an officer saw the 19-year-old swimming star go through a stop sign in Salisbury, Maryland. The trooper saw signs of intoxication and arrested Phelps for driving under the influence of alcohol. The legal drinking age in Maryland is 21.

Phelps was also charged with violation of a license restriction and failure to obey a stop sign. He was released Friday.

The swimmer from suburban Baltimore won eight medals, including six golds, at the Athens Olympics. His total ties 1980 Soviet gymnast Alexandr Dityatin for most medals by an athlete in a single Olympics.
