Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Brazil Thursday, starting his first visit as president to Latin America.
Officials say Mr. Hu and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet to work out trade deals in agriculture, mining and electronics, among others.
Brazil is China's major trade partner in South America. Chinese state-run media report trade between the two countries totaled nearly $8 billion last year, and has surpassed that amount in the first eight months of this year.
During his Latin America trip, Mr. Hu is also scheduled to visit Argentina, Cuba and Chile. He is expected to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Santiago next week, where he will meet with President Bush and other APEC leaders.
