An overseas activist group says China has arrested a prominent member of an underground Protestant church.
The U.S.-based China Aid Association says Cai Zhuohua was taken into custody in Beijing two months ago. The group quotes prosecutors involved in the case as saying Mr. Cai's arrest was part of a broader crackdown on illegal religious activity and publications in China.
The group says Mr. Cai, who ministers to six underground congregations, became a target for official scrutiny following the discovery of 200,000 Bibles and other Christian literature in a warehouse under his control.
China permits only government-controlled houses of worship, but millions of Chinese are believed to worship in underground congregations.
