Colombia's Congress Approves Bill Allowing President Re-Election Bid

Colombia's Congress has approved a bill that will allow President Alvaro Uribe to run for a second presidential term.

The bill, overwhelmingly passed on Tuesday, has been approved by the Senate, but still must receive final approval from the Constitutional Court.

The Associated Press reports supporters of the president had been pushing for the re-election bill. They say Mr. Uribe needs more than one four-year term to end the 40-year rebel conflict in Colombia.

Mr. Uribe's term ends in 2006.
