Bush Nominates Former Army Officer to Lead Veteran's Agency

President Bush has nominated Jim Nicholson, the U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, to replace outgoing Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi.

In a White House ceremony Thursday, Mr. Bush said Mr. Nicholson, a former Army colonel and West Point graduate, is uniquely qualified to lead the health care agency for America's veterans.

In other cabinet news, the White House said the secretaries of Transportation, Labor, Interior and Housing and Urban Development will remain in their posts at Mr. Bush's request.

Since his re-election in November, nine members of Mr. Bush's cabinet, including Secretary of State Colin Powell and Homeland chief Tom Ridge, have announced their resignations.

Mr. Bush has announced nominees for all the openings except the top jobs at the departments of Energy, and Health and Human Services.
