Popular Indian classical singer M.S. Subbulakshmi has died from bronchial pneumonia at the age of 88.
Relatives say she died late Saturday, and would be cremated Sunday.
Subbulakshmi had checked into a Madras hospital 10 days ago with a viral infection, which grew worse in recent days.
She is credited with reviving the popularity of classical Indian music throughout the country.
Among Subbulakshmi's many awards were the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, and the Ramon Magsaysay Award, known as Asia's equivalent of the Nobel prizes.
