Vijay Singh Takes Early Lead in PGA's Mercedes Championships

World number one golfer Vijay Singh of Fiji has a two stroke lead midway through the Professional Golf Association season-opening Mercedes Championships in Hawaii.

Singh birdied the first two holes on his way to carding an 8-under-par 65 in Friday's second round at the Kapalua Plantation course on the island of Maui. He has an overall 36-hole total of 15-under-par 131.

Former Masters Champion Mike Weir of Canada fired a 10-under-par 63 for a two-round score of 133. South Africa's Ernie Els is another shot back at 134 after carding a 65.

Four shots off the lead are Spain's Sergio Garcia and American Jonathan Kaye.

Putting problems slowed Tiger Woods, who is five shots back along with two other American golfers, Stewart Cink and Chad Campbell at 136.

Singh won nine tournaments last year, and overtook Woods as the top-ranked player in the world. The 41-year-old Fijian also was named the PGA tour's Player of the Year.
