Israel Urges Russia to Cancel Reported Deal with Syria

Israel has asked Russia to cancel a reported missile deal with Syria that Moscow and Damascus say does not exist.

Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom says the reported deal will disrupt regional stability and lessen the chances for peace in the Middle East. He says Israel asked Russia to stop negotiations with Syria.

Reports say the proposed deal is for Russia to sell shoulder launched missiles that Israel fears will fall into the hands of Hezbollah guerillas and be used against Israeli targets.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is slated to visit Moscow later this month and Israeli officials believe he could sign the missile deal while there.
