IAEA Says Egypt Not Seeking Nuclear Weapons

United Nations nuclear monitors say they have found no evidence suggesting that Egypt is seeking nuclear weapons.

The International Atomic Energy Agency began investigating facilities in Egypt last month after reports that Cairo did not disclose small scale experiments and imports of nuclear material.

Diplomats in Vienna said Monday the nuclear materials and facilities seen by inspectors are consistent with the activities described by Egypt. They also noted that although some of the incidents in question date back at least 30 years, Egypt's failure to report the activities remains a concern.

Egypt's government says it was unaware of its responsibility to declare the activities, but argues it did not violate its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
