US Soldier, 2 Iraqis Killed in Separate Attacks

The U.S. military says an American soldier and two Iraqis have been killed in separate attacks in northern Iraq.

Authorities say the soldier was killed Wednesday, in a roadside bombing about 180 kilometers north of Baghdad. The two civilians died in a car bomb blast in Mosul. Fourteen others were reported wounded.

Meanwhile, Interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi says he is forming a broad political coalition in his uphill fight to retain his post.

Mr. Allawi, who spoke Wednesday in Baghdad, said coalition details will be released in the near future. He spoke a day after rival Shi'ite leader Ibrahim al-Jaafari was chosen by another slate for the post of prime minister.

Mr. Allawi's secular Shi'ite slate won a mere 14 percent of the vote in last month's elections, and controls only 40 seats in the country's 275-member National Assembly. In contrast, Mr. al-Jaafari's conservative slate won 48 percent and controls 140 seats.
