The International Football Federation (FIFA) has ordered both Albania and Costa Rica to play their next two World Cup qualifying matches behind closed doors because of unruly fan behavior.
FIFA's disciplinary committee made the decisions after fans at both venues threw objects onto the field in separate matches.
In Tirana, fans threw batteries, water bottles, coins and other objects on the field during Albania's 2-0 loss to Ukraine February 9. Flares were ignited in the stands and fans ran onto the field at the end of the match.
Meanwhile in Costa Rica's 2-1 loss to Mexico on the same day, fans threw objects at opposing players, including water bottles, batteries, coins, and fruit.
In addition to the suspensions, Albania was fined $34,400 and Costa Rica was slapped with a $17,000 fine. The two nations have three days to appeal the sanctions.
