Kyrgyzstan Protesters Seize Government Buildings

Thousands of demonstrators have stormed government buildings and demanded the resignation of Kyrgyzstan's President Askar Akayev.

In the city of Jalal-Abad, the protesters took over a police station and at least one other government building. At least 14 police and demonstrators were wounded.

Opposition rallies also erupted in other cities across southern Kyrgyzstan. The protesters say recent elections were fraudulent and marred by irregularities.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the U.S. State Department are calling on the two sides to resolve the issue through negotiations. Kyrgyz government officials say they are willing to sit down to talks, but opposition leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev tells the Associated Press that negotiations are only possible if they involve the president himself.
