Pope Again Cancels Weekly General Audience

Vatican officials say Pope John Paul II will not hold his traditional Wednesday general audience, as he continues his recovery from throat surgery.

But the doctor who heads the medical team treating the pontiff says there are no plans for the pope to return to the hospital. Dr. Rodolfo Proietti spoke to Italy's ANSA news agency following speculation in the country's news media of a serious deterioration of the pontiff's condition.

Meanwhile, Vatican officials would confirm only one appearance for the pope this week. He is expected to deliver his urbi et orbi (to the city and the world) blessing on Easter Sunday, as Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The pope has delegated cardinals to preside over various ceremonies in the days ahead.

The 84-year-old pontiff left the hospital on March 13 after throat surgery to relieve breathing difficulties arising from the flu.
