Ecuador's President Annuls State of Emergency

Ecuadorean President Lucio Gutierrez has rescinded a state of emergency imposed Friday in Quito to ease a growing political crisis over judicial reforms.

The president annulled the emergency declaration Saturday, hours after government opponents accused him of acting like a dictator and demanded his resignation.

The decrees declaring the emergency and dissolving the Supreme Court were enacted after several days of loud but peaceful protests in the capital. They were prompted by the government's restructuring last year of the court.

In December, Congress fired 27 of 31 justices after the president accused them of bias. The replacement judges were fired Friday.

Lawmakers are expected to meet later Sunday to discuss the future of the court.
