Mauresmo, Pierce Winners in Rome Tennis


Second-seed Amelie Mauresmo of France has reached the third round of the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome, a key warm-up for this month's French Open tournament.

Mauresmo, the defending champion, scored a straight-set win over Australian Samantha Stosur, 6-2, 6-0. The French player next faces Italian Silvia Farina-Elia, who beat France's Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, 6-3, 6-3.

Meanwhile, fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia lost to unseeded Argentine Gisela Dulko, 7-5, 6-4. The Argentine faces another Russian, Evgenia Linetskaya, a three-set winner over Flavia Pennetta of Italy, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.

Ai Sugiyama of Japan reached the third round by beating Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela, 6-3, 6-0.She takes on the winner of a match between third seed Serena Williams of the United States and Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

Former French Open winner Mary Pierce of France reached the round of 16 with a straight-set win over Sanda Mamic of Croatia, 6-4, 6-4. Pierce takes on world number two player Maria Sharapova of Russia in the third round.

Catalina Castano of Colombia defeated Maria-Elena Camerin of Italy, 6-2, 6-2. The Colombian faces Vera Zvonareva of Russia, who ousted Serbia-Montenegro's Jelena Jankovic, 6-4, 6-1.

Another Serbian player, Ana Ivanovic, defeated Anna Chakvetadze of Russia, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Ivanovic plays Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, a straight-set winner over Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany, 6-2, 6-4.

Spanish veteran Conchita Martinez defeated Anna Smashnova of Israel in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Martinez next plays seventh-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova, who beat Mara Santangelo of Italy, 6-3, 6-1.

The clay-court tournament is one of several events players are using to prepare for the second major tournament of the year, the French Open, which starts May 23 in Paris.
