Football:  United, Chelsea Vie for Mikel

English football club Manchester United has asked the Premier League to investigate the transfer dispute over Nigerian teenager John Obi Mikel.

The 18-year-old midfielder is at the center of a tug-of-war between United and Chelsea. Mikel is staying at a London hotel until the situation can be sorted out.

Mikel, who plays for the Norwegian club Lyn Oslo, said he was denied advice from his agent and people he trusts and was pressured into signing for Manchester United on April 29.

United chief executive David Gill insisted a proper deal was done with Lyn Oslo and Mikel is the property of his club. However, Chelsea is reported to have signed a contract with Lyn Oslo last November, giving the club first option on Mikel and four other Nigerian teenagers.

Mikel has played only three matches with Lyn Oslo. Before joining that club, he spent eight years training at a soccer academy in Lagos.
