Mongolia Votes for New President

Results are expected Monday in Mongolia's presidential election, after an estimated 40 percent of Mongolia's two and a half million citizens voted Sunday.

People walked, rode horses and drove trucks Sunday to reach polling stations across the vast, sparsely populated country. Opinion polls before the vote showed the candidate of the ex-communist Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party, (Nambariin Enkhbayar) was in the lead.

But if no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates will compete in a run-off June 5th.

Voters said political stability and continued economic growth were the issues most important to them in the fourth presidential race since the country embraced democracy 16 years ago.
