UN Peacekeeper Killed in DRC Attack

The United Nations says a Nepalese peacekeeper has died from injuries suffered when militiamen fired on helicopters in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A U.N. spokesman said Friday the peacekeeper was one of four from Nepal wounded when their helicopters were attacked Thursday while taking off from the village of Lugo in the northeastern region of Ituri.

The spokesman says one helicopter carrying U.N. human rights investigators was hit but managed to take off.

The gunmen were believed to be from the Nationalist and Integrationist Front (FNI) - a group accused of murdering nine Bangladeshi peacekeepers in northeastern Congo in February.

The United Nations has some 12,000 soldiers in Congo to help stop ethnic fighting, after the end of a five-year war.
