Nigeria's Under-20 men's football (soccer) team has eliminated the Netherlands and Argentina ousted Spain in quarterfinal action at the World Youth Championships in the Netherlands.
Nigeria disappointed Dutch fans when it beat the host nation, 10-9 on penalties after the two teams ended regulation tied at 1-1.
In the shootout, both teams missed one of their first five attempts. The Netherlands' Collins John missed his team's 11th shot and was left to watch Nigerian Taye Taiwo hit the match-winner.
Nigeria next takes on Morocco in the semifinals Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi led Argentina to the 3-1 win over Spain, scoring one goal and assisting on another. Messi set up the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute and Gustavo Oberman scored to give the Argentines the advantage.
Argentina next takes on arch rival Brazil in the semifinals Tuesday. Both Argentina and Brazil have won this tournament four times. The third place game and the final are scheduled for July second in Utrecht.
