Thousands Attend Funeral of Slain Shi'ite Iraqi Lawmaker

Thousands of people have turned out in a town near Baghdad for the funeral of slain Shi'ite lawmaker Dhari al-Fayadh, who was killed Tuesday along with his son and three bodyguards.

Thousands marched in a solemn procession in Rashidiya, located 30 kilometers northeast of Baghdad, to mourn the second slain Shi'ite member of parliament.

In Baghdad, a former Iraqi minister of electricity who claimed he represents an insurgent group listed several demands for U.S. forces. Ayham al-Samarie called for a timetable of between one and three years for the complete withdrawal of U.S. forces. He also called for a halt to military offensives against insurgents, and he demanded continued rebuilding of the Iraqi army.

U.S. officials recently said they have held talks with insurgent groups, but reported no breakthroughs.
