Colombian authorities have arrested 12 members of the country's navy for alleged links to cocaine smugglers operating along the Pacific coast in southwestern Colombia.
Officials say two naval officers were among the 12 people taken into custody in Cauca province Wednesday following a three-month investigation.
This is not the first time the Colombian navy has been involved in a drug smuggling scandal.
In April 2004, authorities found a stash of cocaine and heroin hidden on the naval vessel, the Gloria, days before it embarked on a six-month tour of the United States and Europe. The sailing vessel is known as the pride of the Colombian navy.
Colombia is the world's biggest producer of cocaine.
