Kenya: One Dead, Scores Injured as Protests Over Constitution Turn Violent

One person was killed and scores of others injured Wednesday in Kenya as police clashed for a second day with protesters angry over proposed changes to a draft constitution.

Riot police fired teargas, water cannons and used batons against hundreds of demonstrators who rallied in the streets of downtown Nairobi, defying a government ban on protests.

Looters took advantage of the chaos, attacking shops and forcing scared residents off the streets.

Meanwhile, Kenyan lawmakers began debating the proposed changes to a current version of a new constitution that calls for the creation of a powerful prime minister.

But allies of Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki want to amend that clause to retain the powers of the presidency.
