Egypt's election commission has announced the final list of candidates for the country's first multi-candidate presidential election, to be held next month.
Incumbent President Hosni Mubarak will compete against nine other contenders, including Ayman Nour, head of the al-Ghad [Tomorrow] Party. He is one of Mr. Mubarak's most vocal critics and faces a forgery trial after the election.
Also running is Noman Gomaa of the Wafd Party, one of Egypt's oldest and largest opposition parties. The remaining seven contenders are leaders of minor political parties.
Campaigning will begin August 17 and end three days before the September seventh election. Candidates chose emblems to be used on campaign posters and ballots to make candidate recognition easier for the large number of illiterate voters.
