Albanian President Asks Sali Berisha to Form a New Government

Albanian President Alfred Moisiu has named former President Sali Berisha as the country's new prime minister and asked him to form a government.

Mr. Moisiu acted after election officials Thursday declared Mr. Berisha's opposition Democratic Party and its allies winners of July's parliamentary balloting.

Mr. Berisha has promised to reduce the number of cabinet posts from 19 to 14 and to press efforts to wipe out corruption, fight poverty, and move Albania closer to European integration.

Mr. Berisha was Albania's first post Communist president from 1992 until he was forced to resign in 1997 when millions of people lost money in failed investment schemes.
