NHL: Isles Top Rangers in Battle of New York

The New York Islanders overcame a hat-trick (three goals) by National Hockey League star Jaromir Jagr Thursday to beat the cross-town rival Rangers, 5-4.

Mark Parrish scored two goals and Arron Ashem had a short-handed tally for the host Islanders in their second straight win over the Rangers after Jagr's team suffered a loss on home ice Wednesday. He leads the NHL with 10 goals.

The Pittsburgh Penguins had their winless streak stretched to a franchise record seven games with a 6-3 loss to visiting New Jersey. The Devils' Brian Gionta scored two goals for the second time in as many games against the Penguins this season.

In other NHL games Thursday, the Florida Panthers edged the Washington Capitals, 3-2. The Buffalo Sabres got by the Boston Bruins, 4-3. The Toronto Maple Leafs needed overtime to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-4. The Tampa Bay Lightning eclipsed the Atlanta Thrashers, 6-0. The Los Angeles Kings crushed the Dallas Stars, 7-2. The Nashville Predators won their sixth straight game, edging the St. Louis Blues, 3-2, in a shootout. The Calgary Flames beat the Edmonton Oilers, 3-1. And the Vancouver Canucks downed the Phoenix Coyotes, 3-2.
