Football: Arsenal Advances to Elimination Stage of Champions League Tournament


The English football club Arsenal has advanced to the elimination stage of the Champions League tournament. Arsenal picked up its fourth victory in Group-B Wednesday with a 3-0 win over Sparta Prague.

Ajax Amsterdam of the Netherlands was a 4-2 winner over Thun of Switzerland in the other group match.

Bayern Munich of Germany is still waiting to advance because of a 2-1 loss to Juventus of Italy in Group-A. Bruges of Belgium edged Rapid Vienna of Austria, 3-2.

Spanish champion Barcelona took a step closer to advancing with a 5-0 victory over Panathinaikos of Greece. Werder Bremen of Germany was a 4-3 winner over Udinese of Italy in the other Group-C game.

A pair of 1-0 results came in Group-D, where Villarreal of Spain beat Benfica of Portugal, and Lille of France prevailed over England's Manchester United.

On Tuesday, Real Madrid of Spain and Lyon of France advanced to the group stage with victories. The next Champions League group games are on November 22 and 23. The final group games are on December 6 and 7.
