Football: Keane Leaves Manchester United

In a shocking announcement, team captain Roy Keane has left English football club Manchester United. The move comes two weeks after he lambasted his teammates in an in-house television interview so scathing the club refused to broadcast it.

United said in a statement on its Web site that the 34-year-old captain had his contract canceled by mutual consent, leaving him free to join another club.

Keane had already said he expected to leave the club when his contract expired at the end of this season. The Ireland midfielder bowed out of international football last month, two days after his country's World Cup hopes ended. He had played for United since 1993 and until recently it was assumed he would end his career with the team.

Keane said it was a sad day for him, but he believed it was time for him to move on. He helped United win seven Premier League titles and four FA Cups.
