Taleban Abducts Indian Engineer in Afghanistan

Taleban insurgents have claimed responsibility for kidnapping an Indian engineer and three Afghans in southwestern Afghanistan.

The French news agency (AFP) quotes a purported spokesman for the group as saying the Indian national will be killed if his firm does not leave Afghanistan.

The Indian man, two guards and a driver were abducted late Saturday while driving in Nimroz province. Afghan officials say the Indian engineer has been working on a road construction project funded by the Indian government.

The Indian Foreign Ministry condemned the kidnapping and called for the immediate release of all persons.

There have been a number of kidnappings in southern Afghanistan. A British engineer and his Afghan interpreter were kidnapped in late August, then killed.
