Nigerian Official Back Home After Jumping Bail in Britain

A Nigerian state governor arrested in Britain and charged with money laundering is back home and on the job after skipping bail.

Officials in the southern state of Bayelsa say Diepreye Alamieyeseigha returned home Monday, greeted by hundreds of cheering supporters who lined the streets of the state capital, Yenagoa.

It was not immediately clear how the governor managed to avoid police detection in leaving Britain. Officials with Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission say he may have disguised himself as a woman to travel.

It is unlikely he will be re-arrested, as Nigerian state governors have immunity from prosecution while in office.

Mr. Alamieyeseigha was arrested in London in September and charged with laundering three million dollars. He was later freed on bail with the condition that he not leave Britain.
