International media advocacy groups says Eritrea has released a journalist who had been jailed held without trial for four years.

The Paris-based group Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontieres) reports Dawit Isaac was released Friday. The New York-based group Committee to Protect Journalists confirmed his release.

Mr. Isaac was arrested in September of 2001 during a crackdown by the Eritrean government in which at least ten journalists were arrested in a matter of days and accused of various crimes against the state.

The groups report they Mr. Isaac's release came about after diplomatic pressure from Sweden. The journalist holds Swedish citizenship.

The journalism groups report at least 12 journalists are still being held by the Eritrean government.
