Algerian President Has Ulcer Surgery

Algerian officials say President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has successfully undergone surgery for a stomach ulcer at a French hospital.

Algeria's official press agency did not say when the operation took place. But it quoted a medical bulletin released by the presidency that said Mr. Bouteflika is recovering from the surgery and that there is no reason for concern about his health.

Mr. Bouteflika, who is 68, flew to Paris nine days ago on the advice of doctors treating him for gastro-intestinal bleeding in Algiers. Rumors about his condition had been circulating until today Monday report.
