Afghan Court Convicts Britons, Indian for Gun Smuggling

An Afghan court has convicted two Britons and an Indian on gun-smuggling charges and gave them two-year suspended sentences.

Naveen Joshi of India and Britons Peter Eaton and Mike Shaw have been in jail since their October 13 arrests. An American, Sargon Heinrich of California, was also tried but acquitted of the charges.

The men were arrested during a police raid on a guest house in the capital, Kabul.

They have denied the charges and said they were treated roughly during the raid. Joshi claimed police beat a confession out of him and threatened to shoot him.

He and the two Britons will be released after they provide guarantees that they will return to court if the case is appealed, as the prosecutor has vowed.

Mr. Heinrich was ordered released subject to the same guarantee.
