Report: UN to Act Quickly on New Rights Panel

A published report says the United Nations will try to produce an alternative to its widely discredited Human Rights Commission within weeks.

The New York Times reports Sunday that U.N. officials have decided they must act quickly in order to restore the world body's credibility this year.

The Human Rights Commission has come under fire for allowing the participation of countries accused of severe human rights violations.

Negotiations on a new commission resume later this month. Some agreement must be reached quickly in order for a plan to be in place by March when the current commission reconvenes in Geneva.

A new Human Rights Commission is part of Secretary-General Kofi Annan's comprehensive reform plan for the United Nations.
