Pro-Chavez Lawmakers Dominate Venezuelan Congress

Lawmakers loyal to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez have opened a new legislative session, after sweeping recent elections boycotted by major opposition parties.

Each of the lawmakers at Thursday's opening session was pro-government.

Mr. Chavez's Fifth Republic Movement and allied political parties won all 167 seats in last month's National Assembly elections.

Major opposition parties withdrew, saying they did not trust the country's electoral system. They also voiced concerns about high-tech voting machines.

Observers from the European Union and the Organization of American States said the elections were mostly fair, although OAS officials detailed several irregularities, including early poll closings and confusing ballots.
