Fujimori Supporters Register Him As Presidential Candidate

Supporters of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori have filed papers registering him as a presidential candidate in Peru, despite a ban on his holding public office again before 2011.

Mr. Fujimori's daughter Keiko filed the papers Friday in Lima, surrounded by her father's supporters. But the National Election Board has the power to reject the application for April's election.

Meanwhile, a judge in Chile opened an extradition investigation Friday, as Mr. Fujimori sits in jail in Santiago. Chilean authorities arrested him in November at Peru's request. He is accused of links to the death squad murders of 25 people during his 10-year presidency.

Mr. Fujimori fled to his ancestral homeland, Japan, in 2000, and resigned in the midst of a corruption scandal.
