Muslims Across South Asia Celebrate Eid-al-Adha

Muslims throughout South Asia are observing Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, with prayers for tens of thousands of victims of the devastating October 8 earthquake in Pakistan and Indian Kashmir.

The three-day religious event comes at the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

In Pakistan, the celebrations were marred by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake that rattled the northern part of the country during mid-morning Wednesday. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

In India, tens of thousands of Muslims offered prayers at New Delhi's historic Jama Masjid, while President Abdul Kalam offered prayers at the mosque in the presidential estate.

In Bangladesh, President Iajuddin Ahmed and Prime Minister Khaleda Zia hosted several receptions. They urged their fellow citizens to work with the spirit of sacrifice to build a welfare society free of exploitation and deprivation.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
