NHL: Rookie Ovechkin Lifts Capitals to Win Over Mighty Ducks


Washington Capitals rookie Alexander Ovechkin has his first National Hockey League hat trick, scoring his third goal of the game in overtime to lift the Capitals to a 3-2 win over the Mighty Ducks in Anaheim.

Ovechkin leads NHL rookies with 30 goals and 55 points. His game-winning goal Friday snapped Washington's six-game losing streak.

Carolina's Frantisek Kaberle scored on a penalty shot midway through overtime to give the Hurricanes a 5-4 victory over the visiting Nashville Predators. The Hurricanes have won six straight games.

New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur notched his second straight shutout in the Devils 3-0 win over the visiting Vancouver Canucks. The Devils have a five-game winning streak.

The Atlanta Thrashers earned their fourth straight win by downing the St. Louis Blues 2-0 in Atlanta.

Elsewhere in the NHL Friday, the Tampa Bay Lightning doubled the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 in Tampa, and the Chicago Blackhawks eclipsed Pittsburgh 4-1, handing the visiting Penguins their fifth straight loss.
