Rebel Ambush in Northeastern India Kills 5

update

Indian officials say separatist rebels in northeastern Manipur state have ambushed a vehicle carrying paramilitary troops, killing four soldiers and a civilian, and wounding two other security men.

The attack took place Monday at a busy market in Thoubal, south of the state capital, Imphal.

Local authorities say the identity of the attackers has not been established and no one has claimed responsibility for the assault.

Indian government forces have been battling dozens of armed separatist groups in several northeastern states for decades. The violence has claimed thousands of lives.

Many rebel groups are fighting for regional autonomy, but some are seeking outright independence.
