Nephew of Peruvian President Convicted on Rape Charges

A nephew of Peru's embattled President Alejandro Toledo has been convicted on rape charges.

A Lima court handed Miguel Toledo a suspended four-year sentence Wednesday. Prosecutors had been seeking a six-year prison sentence.

Toledo was arrested Tuesday in Lima, three months after he failed to appear to hear the court's verdict on the charges. At the time, his lawyer claimed he was unable to attend because of an ear infection.

The 36-year-old Toledo and three other men were accused of drugging a 22-year-old woman and raping her in March 2004. He denied drugging her, and said the sex was consensual.

This is the latest in a series of scandals that have plagued President Toledo since taking office in 2001. His sister Margarita is under house arrest on charges she engaged in an illegal election petition scheme.
