Indian authorities say an explosion set off by Maoist rebels in central Chhattisgarh state has killed 13 civilians and wounded several others.
Local police say the incident took place late Friday south of the state capital, Raipur, and that the blast was most likely intended for security forces.
The Maoists have stepped up attacks on police and government supporters in the area in recent months.
Last week, they seized a train in neighboring eastern Jharkhand state, holding some 200 people on board at gunpoint for several hours before leaving.
The rebels say they are fighting on behalf of poor people and landless laborers.
