NHL: Canadiens Edge Capitals in Overtime


Montreal captain Saku Koivu ended a 23-game goal scoring slump Thursday in overtime to give his Canadiens a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals in National Hockey League action.

Koivu backhanded the puck past Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig with 57 seconds to go in the five-minute extra session to lift the Habs (Canadiens) on their home ice. Montreal is trying to hold on to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Edmonton Oilers shut out the Los Angeles Kings 4-0 to tie Anaheim and Vancouver for sixth place in the Western Conference.

The Devils, Lightning, Senators, Red Wings, and Coyotes also won Thursday.

The New Jersey Devils improved their playoff chances with a 3-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

The defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning topped the Atlanta Thrashers 4-3.

The Ottawa Senators beat the New York Rangers 4-1.

The NHL-leading Detroit Red Wings knocked off the Nashville Predators 4-2.

And the Phoenix Coyotes trounced the San Jose Sharks 5-2.
