Opposition Party Factions Clash in Cairo

update

Competing factions of an Egyptian opposition party have clashed in Cairo.

Supporters of the former Wafd party leader, Noman Gomaa, attempted a takeover of party headquarters Saturday and fought with opposing members. There were reports of gunfire and at least 20 people were injured.

The Wafd, a secular party, ran against President Hosni Mubarak's National Democratic Party in last December's parliamentary elections. It came in third behind Mr. Mubarak's NDP.

After the election, supporters of an opponent, Mustapha el-Tawil, moved to replace Gomaa.
