Students Stage Scattered Protests in France

update

French students have staged scattered demonstrations across the country Tuesday blocking some rail lines and roads and briefly halting operations at an airport in the northwest.

Hundreds of students marched through Paris and Marseilles and briefly occupied the tarmac of the airport in Nantes despite the government's decision Monday to abandon a controversial youth jobs bill following weeks of mass protests.

Some students say they will continue such actions until a new jobs law is approved. Others say they have more grievances and are targeting other employment laws.

Monday, President Jacques Chirac threw out the controversial youth employment law, and lawmakers are set to discuss the proposed replacement measure this week.

Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin says the new bill will include subsidies to employers who hire disadvantaged youth.
